What refacing includes

New doors and fronts on the cabinets you already have

Cabinet refacing, also called cabinet resurfacing, puts new doors, drawer fronts, hinges and pulls on cabinet boxes that are still in good shape. Your layout, countertops, sink and appliances stay as they are. At Dreamery it starts at $7,500, with one written, itemized price before work starts.

  1. New doors, made to measure for each opening
  2. Drawer fronts in the same style and finish
  3. Concealed hinges, adjusted so the doors line up
  4. Pulls or knobs, or a handleless look

Before and after

Same kitchen, new doors

Many South Florida kitchens built in the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s still have their original oak or white thermofoil raised-panel doors. Drag across the picture to compare, then pick a finish. The counters, sink, appliances and floor are the same on both sides, because refacing does not touch them.

After: the same kitchen with warm white shaker doors and brushed brass bar pulls; counters, sink, appliances and floor unchanged

On a real job the frames keep their current finish and sit mostly behind the new doors; matching panels for exposed sides and crown are an extra, priced at the measure.

Refacing, painting or new cabinets?

Paint changes the color of solid wood doors but keeps their shape. Refacing gives you new doors in a new style. New cabinets are the answer when the boxes are worn out or the layout has to change.

We do not recommend refacing particleboard boxes or boxes soft from water damage: new doors will not fix them, and custom cabinets from our Coral Springs shop are the better buy. If only the sink base is damaged, we look at it at the measure; a replacement box is priced on the same itemized estimate. A new galley kitchen at our Essential level runs $14,000–$18,000 turnkey without appliances; the kitchen cost calculator shows every size.

What cabinet refacing costs

Refacing at Dreamery starts at $7,500

The final price depends on:

  • how many doors and drawer fronts your kitchen has
  • the door style and finish
  • the hardware
  • extras, such as end panels or a replacement box

You get one written, itemized price before work starts. Financing may be available for qualified buyers; see financing.

Is your kitchen a good candidate for refacing?

Refacing makes sense only when the cabinet boxes are in good shape. Four quick questions:

Are the cabinet boxes solid? Shelves and bottoms feel firm, with no soft or swollen spots (the sink base is the next question).
Any water damage in the cabinet under the sink?
What are the boxes made of?
Does the current layout work for you?

Answer the four questions to see what we would recommend. Either way, we check the boxes in person at the free measure.

How it works

From the free measure to new doors

  1. A designer measures an oak raised-panel cabinet door, with door samples on the counter

    Free in-home measure

We look inside the cabinets to check the boxes, measure every door and drawer opening, and bring door and finish samples.

  2. Cabinet door samples in white, navy, sage, greige and light oak, with brass, black and nickel bar pulls

    Your style, one written price

You pick the door style, finish and pulls in your own light. One itemized price covers the doors, drawer fronts, hinges and pulls, plus any end panels or replacement box, before work starts.

  3. An installer adjusts a concealed hinge on a new white shaker cabinet door

Made to measure, installed in place

Your doors and drawer fronts are made to order for your openings. We take off the old ones, hang the new doors on concealed hinges, align them and fit the pulls. Counters, sink and appliances stay in place.

Door styles and finishes

Shaker or slab, painted or wood grain

Choose between shaker doors, with a framed center panel, and flat slab doors, a plain modern front that works with or without handles. Fronts come in wood-grain and solid-color laminates, high-gloss and textured surfaces, or paint. The designer brings samples to your home, so you see them in your own light, next to your countertops and floors.

Refacing in a condo

Refacing is a good fit for many condos. The cabinets stay on the wall, so there is less demolition than in a full remodel. We still take care of the building side: the association’s alteration paperwork, a certificate of insurance naming the association, elevator reservations and work inside posted building hours.

Questions homeowners ask us

How much does cabinet refacing cost?

At Dreamery, kitchen cabinet refacing starts at $7,500. The final price depends on how many doors and drawer fronts you have, the door style, finish and hardware, and any end panels or replacement boxes. You get one written, itemized price before work starts.

What is the downside of refacing cabinets?

Refacing keeps your layout and your cabinet boxes. We do not recommend it on particleboard boxes or boxes soft from water damage, and if you want to move the sink or range, new doors will not get you there. In those cases new cabinets are the better buy. We check this at the measure.

Is it cheaper to reface or replace kitchen cabinets?

Refacing usually costs less, because the boxes, countertops and plumbing stay. The two prices cover different jobs: our refacing starts at $7,500 for new fronts, hinges and pulls, while a new galley kitchen at our Essential level runs $14,000–$18,000 turnkey without appliances, with new cabinets, countertops and installation.

Is it better to paint or reface kitchen cabinets?

Paint changes the color but keeps the old door shape, and usually the old hinges. Refacing gives you new doors in a new style, with new hinges and pulls. If you like the shape of your solid wood doors and only want a new color, paint may be enough; for a different look, reface.

How long do refaced cabinets last?

It depends mostly on the boxes underneath, which is why we only reface boxes in good shape. Our workmanship is covered for one year, and the manufacturers’ warranties are passed on to you.

How long does cabinet refacing take?

The doors and drawer fronts are made to order first. Installation happens with the cabinets left in place, so your counters and sink stay in place and in use, except while we hang the doors around them. You get the finish date in writing with your price.

What door styles and finishes can I choose?

Shaker or flat-slab doors, in wood-grain or solid-color laminates, high-gloss or textured surfaces, or paint, with bar pulls, knobs or a handleless look. The designer brings samples to your home so you can choose in your own light.

What are refacing doors made of?

Most fronts are MDF, finished in one of three ways: a fused laminate in wood-grain or solid colors, a high-gloss or textured surface, or paint. The designer brings each option to your home as a sample.

Can you reface cabinets in a condo?

Yes. We prepare the association’s alteration paperwork, provide a certificate of insurance naming the association, book the elevator and work inside the building’s hours. Since the cabinets stay on the wall, there is less demolition than in a full remodel.
