A new kitchen inside an old Coral Gables house
Coral Gables was planned as a Mediterranean Revival town: stucco, barrel-tile roofs, arched doorways, wood beams. The kitchens in those 1920s houses were often small working rooms at the back of the house, kept apart from the living areas. The goal now is a kitchen that works like a new one and still looks like it belongs to the house.
That comes down to choices made early. Painted shaker or flat-panel doors, a calm stone, warm wood on the island, hardware in an aged finish, and a range hood that looks like part of the room rather than an appliance. Glass uppers make sense where the ceiling is high enough to carry them. The 3D rendering places the new kitchen next to your own arches and openings, so you can judge it before anything is built.
Then the work itself. Plaster on masonry is normal in the older houses, and few of those walls are perfectly flat or plumb. Our cabinets are built to the numbers taken in your kitchen, with filler and scribe pieces cut on site to close the gaps. The in-home measure and the written, itemized estimate are free. The 3D design package is $99 (regularly $500), and free when you sign the contract.

Historic villages, gated estates and the city's design review
The 1920s sections. You find Merrick-era houses in the Coral Gables Section and around Granada and the Country Club Section. Merrick also built small themed villages, among them French Normandy, Chinese, Dutch South African and Italian, after some buyers found the Mediterranean style too uniform. Kitchens in all of them share the same practical issues: thick walls, small original rooms, and doorways nobody wants to lose.
Further south. Cocoplum, Gables Estates, Snapper Creek Lakes and Hammock Lakes came later than Merrick's original city, with bigger lots and bigger houses, and several are guard-gated. There the questions change. Two islands or one? Where does the prep sink go? Does the pantry open off the kitchen or sit behind it? Our Coral Springs shop is about 55 minutes from Coral Gables, and the cabinets arrive as finished boxes.
The city's review. Coral Gables' Board of Architects reviews exterior changes: facades, paint colors, windows, roof tiles, additions. Historic designation adds a second review, also aimed at the exterior. A kitchen that stays inside the house is generally outside both. A new window over the sink or a door to the terrace is not, so we look up whether the house is designated and flag any exterior change while the design is still on paper.

Will the city review my Coral Gables kitchen remodel?
Usually not, if the work stays inside. The Board of Architects and the historic review deal with what shows on the outside: facades, windows, doors, paint and roofs. If the new kitchen needs a different window or a new opening to the yard, that part goes through the city's design review, and we raise it before the design is final.
Can a new kitchen still feel right in a 1920s Mediterranean house?
Yes, if the style decisions come first. Painted doors, a quiet stone, warm wood and hardware in bronze or unlacquered brass tend to sit well with arches and beams. High-gloss slab doors usually fight them. You see the result in the 3D rendering, in your own room, before a single box is built.
The walls in our 1920s Gables house are out of square. How do custom cabinets deal with that?
They are made for it. Each wall is measured at several heights, the cabinets are built to those numbers in our shop, and filler strips and end panels are scribed on site to sit tight against the plaster. Stock cabinets set against a crooked wall leave gaps that caulk only hides for a while.
Do you work in gated neighborhoods like Cocoplum and Gables Estates?
Yes. Guard-gated communities usually want the contractor's names and insurance on file and limit the hours for work and deliveries. We get those details from the association first and plan the schedule around them. Bigger kitchens there often mean a second island or a separate prep area, which the 3D design lays out before anything is priced.
How long does a Coral Gables kitchen remodel take?
Plan on 4–6 weeks from the signed contract to an installed kitchen for a typical job. Old plaster can hide old pipes, and if something like that changes the scope, you see the cost and the new date before we go ahead. The finish date is in the contract, with a penalty schedule for delays that are our fault.
